Adda Work Embroidery – A Complete Guide

If we exclude adda work embroidery from Pakistani bridal dresses, nothing is left in the outfit regarding beauty and charm. Pakistani and Indian ladies love to wear bridal wear with some adda work in the wedding ensemble. However, most people need to learn what adda work embroidery is and how this traditional technique enhances the overall look and feel of conventional desi outfits.

What is adda work embroidery?

Adda work is an antique technique of hand embroidery used on various fabrics, including organza, net, chiffon, raw silk with thread, and other typical accessories. This handwork is mainly seen in Pakistani and Indian bridal dresses. Add-work embroidery is an integral part of embellishments when it comes to crafting a picture-perfect desi bridal dress.

What elements are used in Adda Work Embroidery?

Tons of ornaments and elements are used in this famous technique. Since it is a hand-embroidery technique (although machine embroidery can be done, a machine can’t achieve grace and embossed look created by handwork), every element is manually placed and inserted with hands. That is why it is known as laborious work. Here is the list of top elements that are used in adda work embroidery to embellish the bridal outfit;

Kora and Dabka;

Kora and dabka are made of a specific thread and used almost in every bridal outfit. The difference between Kora and Dabka is that Kora is a bit stretchier than Dabka and has a more graceful look than the other one. However, if you want a more shiny and texture look, then dabka is the perfect choice. Both dabka and kora are used in zardozi work.

Naqshi Work

Like kora and dabka, naqshi is also used in zardozi work. Naqshi is a shiny thread used to craft leaves and flowers on the fabric in adda work hand embroidery. Usually, naqshi is used with a combination of kora and dabka for a breathtakingly beautiful embroidery look. A specific needle is used in the kora, dabka and naqshi work.

Beads and Pearls

Beads and pearls are also decorative elements of Adda work embroidery. Small and big, white and maroon beads on the bridal outfit look captivating. Similarly, pearls shine like tiny stars. Both these elements are pasted on the fabric with the help of silk thread or glue. Beads and pearls are used in wedding guest dresses as well.

Sequins

There is hardly a bridal dress that doesn’t contain any sequin. Many types, shapes, sizes, and styles of sequins are easily available in the market and used according to the dress design, colour, and fabric. Mostly, gold sequins are used with multi-thread embroidery on the net and chiffon fabric that looks fantastic.

Tilla Work (Zari Embroidery)

Tilla’s work is all about a specific gold or silver thread. Designers create unlimited decorative designs using these metallic threads in fancy, formal dresses. This sort of embroidery falls under the Zardozi group. The origin of Tilla work is Kashmir, also known as Zari work.

Resham Embroidery

Rehsam work (or raw silk) is done with multicoloured silk threads. Designers create breathtakingly beautiful flowers, leaves and other designs with this soft thread. This intricate and elaborate embroidery technique is widely used in Indian and Pakistani designer clothes.

Gotta Patti

Gota patti is a stylish gold and silver lace used widely in casual and formal women’s wear. Gotta is a metallic lace made up of metal-coated weft yarn. Gotta or gota belongs to zari work, containing small pieces of zari. Gotta patti elevates the edges or borders of dupatta, kameez, and shalwar hemline.
